Chicago showed the world how it’s done. The Air Jordan series has been a nocompromise, shape shifting dynasty since day one, and the first chapter was a blockbuster. When Nike signed this Brooklyn-born rookie, the Air Jordan was born. The first chapter was created at rapid speed to prepare for the 1985/86 season, cut high for support, flexible where it mattered, Nike Air cushioned and available in home and away team colorways that incurred threats from league officials, shattering the conservative palette of hoops shoes of the era. An immediate hit from the moment it debuted, the Air Jordan 1 was available in an array of makeups. That shock absorbent technology, padding on the collar and hard wearing leather that could withstand some punishment was ideal for another kind of airtime too. Just as interest shifted to a potential sequel, the Air Jordan 1 unexpectedly became a popular skate shoe that inspired a wave of hi-tops for street and vert use, open to self-expression with contrasting laces and marker pen sketches. After this design was re-released to commemorate Michael Jordan’s first retirement in the mid 1990s, a new fanbase would help the shoe take flight again.
