The blueprint was written in canvas and rubber. When the Converse All Star debuted 100 years ago, the foundations of athletic performance footwear were set. After multiple iterations, salesman and player Chuck Taylor put his name to the shoe to birth the era of the Chuck. With its high traction outsole and tough-wearing rubber bumper, this was innovation, early 20th century style. From there, it represented both team uniformity and rebel attitude. In the decades that followed, it became the shoe of choice for misfits, cool kids, skaters, crews, rivals, enemies, rockers, punks, rappers and skaters. Defying age or gender, the Chuck’s appeal exploded in the 1970s and 1980s when new bolder colors and patterns were introduced. Since then, almost every fabric and franchise has been applied to this design. Ultimate expression.
